Co-founders of the Phoenix News Times and Village Voice Media, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are truly helping others bring justice to the United States of America. Oddly enough, the story of how they serve the ultimate interest of the public is two-fold and stratified with irony. However, most rue and good stories of truth trouncing injustice are that way.
It all ends with the Lacey and Larkin Fund, which supports groups that advocate for human, civil and migrant rights as well as freedom of speech and civic participation in the State of Arizona. The fund itself stems from a lawsuit that results in more than 3 million USD (United States Dollars) awarded to Lacey and Larkin.
The act in question that kicks up all this dust is the arrests of Lacey and Larkin on October 18, 2007. Knowing their rights and what constitutes a violation of them, the two journalists do what they do and bring attention to this turn of events. Their arena of choice is a court of law and their victory follows an uphill battle if there ever were one.
The truth is made known and recognized in the United States Court of Appeals for the ninth circuit. That is not quite the Supreme Court, but seeing as most cases do not even make it close to the Court of Appeals let alone win, it is a major victory to be sure. The person responsible for the arrests and their motivations behind the execution of this order is where the story takes an eyebrow-raising turn. The person in question is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The possible reasoning behind the maneuver is payback for the releasing of knowledge regarding grand jury proceedings which seek reporter’s notes on articles pertaining to the sheriff.
And, just like a spark to a puddle of gas, the story of the story of Lacey, Larkin and Sheriff Arpaio ignites flames that grow with more stories of corruption and of pushing back against injustices. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is a hub of information and one more link in network of organizations that do for others. Read more: Jim Larkin | Huffington Post
And, some of the names that are on this network of organizations are becoming major players in their own right within the political area. Names like the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) Arizona, the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition, Justice that Works and Promise Arizona are just a few, of many that are on the list. Together they fight the good fight across the United States any in way that they can.
